The bright golden orange trout in the foreground is a spawning male Brook Trout; the other fish along side is a Rainbow trout. The Brook was quite smitten with the Rainbow, that said, the magic for these two alas will never happen, as they mature and spawn at vastly different times of the year. I spent the better part of the afternoon photographing spawning Chinook in this stretch of the river and had the chance to observe these two "hanging out" together, holding to the side of a long pool. Many trout species will "hybridize" including Brook Trout and Bull Trout, Rainbow and Cutthroat; however it is unlikely that this Rainbow will spawn with this sexually mature Brook Trout. Rainbow Trout typically spawn in February or March, and Brook Trout in late summer to early fall. This didn’t seem to be an issue for the Brook; he continued to display mating behaviors, throwing his dorsal fin erect and exhibiting territorial behaviors when other fish were in the vicinity.
