Kokanee # 4051 (2010 Run)
People who fished the waters of Wallowa Lake in 2010 were treated to record breaking sized Kokanee. Several state records were set and broken during the year and then the world record, previously held by British Columbia, fell when a Pendleton Oregon man landed a 9.67 lbs fish from the lake.
For reference, ocean going Sockeye typically weigh in at about 5 - 7 lbs. Kokanee and Sockeye are the same species of salmon, Onchorynchus nerka, Kokanee however are (landlocked), unable to out-migrate to the ocean. Often their out migration corridors are blocked and as a result Kokanee complete their life cycle entirely in freshwater.
