Red Journey - Sockeye # 8070
In 2010 an estimated 34.5 Million Sockeye entered the Fraser River system in Canada. It was the largest return of Sockeye Salmon to hit the Fraser in nearly 100 years. Between 6 - 7 million of these fish entered the Adams River / Shuswap Lake complex, one of many tributaries to the Fraser, where I slipped in to photograph a river literally running red.
It was such an honor to "lay in" with these incredible animals, to observe their courtship behaviors, territorial defenses, and perseverance in fulfilling their mission. I've often thought if I could apply one tenth of their strength and determination, what more might I accomplish in this life.
