Winter Reflection ~ Wallowa Lake
Joseph, Oregon
Wallowa Lake is a stunning example of a glacially formed lake, flanked by two lateral moraines east and west and a terminal moraine at the north end. The lake is approximately 3.5 miles long, 0.75 miles wide with a maximum depth of 299 feet. A much-welcomed sunny and reasonably warm (15°F) day in early January sent me out to shoot anything that caught my eye. I set out for the moraine knowing it would be sun drenched and warm, however bright mid day sun is a photographers worst nightmare, so I waited…. Minutes after the sun set behind Chief Joseph peak I began shooting, trying to capture the fleeting ephemeral qualities of evening light. By the time I hiked back down to the truck the temperature had plummeted to 5°F. A week after this photograph was taken the lake froze over and remained frozen until the first week of May.
