Sockeye salmon were extirpated from Wallowa Lake in 1916 with the construction of the Wallowa Lake Dam. Remnant populations were observed in the lower Wallowa River below the dam until the 1930's when they became extinct. It is estimated that between 25 - 30,000 Sockeye returned to the lake historically.
